About
Jaskamal Dhesi Kaur’s work invites us on a journey of metamorphosis and introspection. She likes to call creativity her first language, as she has been making art for as long as she can remember and it was the first thing, and sometimes only thing, that made sense to her in this world. Dhesi shares that she is merely a vessel for the Creative Energy to work through her, and it is her job as an artist to stay tuned to this powerful and ruling force. Art is a spiritual way of life, and without it, nothing would make sense to her anymore.
She shares that art is her Soul’s way of expressing the human experience, and as she keeps evolving, her expression will evolve with her. A lot of times, her expression evolves before she even realizes her own evolution. It’s like her Soul is always communicating with her through art, helping her process the human experience and sometimes even foreshadowing her spiritual evolution.
After a months long burn out and a long break from painting in 2024, Dhesi demonstrates her emotional transformation by abandoning her usual choice of a dark color palette and dreary subjects, in favor of the bright and abstract. For this Amsterdam-based artist, there is no separation of the art from the artist. Dhesi always lets her Soul guide her creative process, and finds herself surprised by the final result each time. The latest series of abstract paintings are a reflection of her personal rebirth: she finds herself completely disinterested in the darker matters she was previously so drawn to. The bright colors interweave with each other in delicate lines, or dominate the canvas with bold splashes of color. The vigor emanating from the canvas reminds us of the often exhausting, and sometimes even violent, process of personal change. And yet, the energetic orchestra of colors and shapes reminds us that this change can breathe new life into us, expanding our lungs.
